Aurora Hunting & Environment 9 days

In this tour, you will discover the amazing landscape of the Southwest corner of Iceland while learning about environmental sustainability and participating in volunteering activities.

The Itinerary:

Day 1 Welcome and introduction of the program and the goals.

The participants will be picked up at Keflavík Int. airport according to their arrival and taken to the hostel in Reykjavik.

There will be a welcoming where participants will be informed about the program for the next 8 days.

Day 2 Workshop 1. Icelandic culture and environmental protection

Morning: There will be a project seminar about Icelandic culture and introduction about environmental protection

The Afternoon: The participants will attend environmental protection activity organized by the local coordinator.

Day 3 Golden circle

We see classics today. Start with a visit to the ancient Viking Parliament area of Þingvellir and following Gullfoss the beautiful double “Golden Falls”and the active geothermal area of Geysir, where we can see Strokkur “the churn” spout up to 25 meters (70 feet) every five to seven minutes.

In the afternoon we will arrive at Solheimar ecovillage which is a world-renowned sustainable community known for its artistic and ecological atmosphere.

At night: The participants will watch an environmental documentary about the importance of environmental protection.

Day 4 Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Snæfellsnes peninsula in western Iceland which is sometimes called “Iceland in miniature,” due to its many different kinds of geology all in one place. We will visit Snæfellsjökull volcano, a seal colony Ytri-Tunga, Arnarstapi and Hellnar spectacular rock formations, the gorgeous  Djúpalónssandur black beach a more. It is a legendary area of magic and beauty, immortalized in Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”.

Day 5 Workshop 2: Food waste management

Afternoon: Volunteering for the local community with a special focus on plastic pollution.

Mid-term evaluation

Day 6 Geothermal plant and community work

Morning: The participants will visit the geothermal power plant in Iceland and the factory where professionals will make an explanation to the volunteers that how the Icelandic government makes rational use of natural geothermal energy and how to combine the geothermal energy with sustainable development.

Afternoon: Local community Volunteering

Evening: Environmental Documentary

Day 7. Sustainability and recycling center

Workshop 3: Topic – Sustainable development

Visiting the Recycling center

Day 8 Final evaluation and group presentation

Glacier exhibition

Tidying and cleaning

Farewell evening

Day 9 Departure

The participants will leave the after luggage packing and will be taken to the Keflavik International Airport Reykjavik according to their departure.

** Volunteers will have environmental tasks in different areas in Fjardabyggd, for example cleaning the coastline, planting trees and flowers, taking down old fences, removing lupines or other plants and fixing hiking paths. Our work will also depend on weather conditions, which is why we have to be flexible.

*** Every night we will identify the best viewing sites according to conditions and forecast.
